Welcome to my new section — highlights of the week!

I decided to tell you about things that amazed me and that seemed interesting to share. As I want to save more of what can be useful, fascinating and just cool, I’ll write about films, TV-series, music, ideas and thoughts of the past week.

I hope it will be amusing and diverting in some ways:)

Week 1

19 — 25 Oct

At the beginning of the week, I was finishing my homework for university. I was to translate a text about the importance of translators. One of the parts of the text was about a slogan that was translated incorrectly and caused financial losses. I was so intrigued, so I surfed the net and found some information on this part of the translation as a whole.

It seemed quite interesting to read about mistakes and difficulties of interpreting phrases and mottos into a different language in order to convey the same sense and ideas of a company. It is hard to fit in the cultural realia and mentality of various nations. That is why I went into this topic and I am going to work it out.

When it comes to YouTube, I am unstoppable. If I happen to visit this website, I can open lots of videos to watch and overload my browser. I usually watch a lot of videos in English and German (so as to gain some listening skills, I’m in progress!) and this week was not an exception.

Firstly, I watched a TV-show with Zhanna Badoeva. That episode was about Luxembourg and I was very much impressed by their lifestyle, legal system and social sphere. At the end of the video, I shed a tear and wished I was born there. You can watch the video here.

Secondly, I found an atmospheric and aesthetic YouTube Channel — girl in calico. It was like a blessing to watch perfect autumn vibes somewhere in the countryside. I watched a girl living the village-life dreamlike from movies. Such an inspiration!

Thirdly, I watched a kind of report on Jake Gyllenhaal by KinoPoisk and made up my mind to watch more of his films. Brokeback Mountain was so good that I’m sure, others will be the same.

Fourthly, another video by Rick Steeves was about Rome. I was happy to see the places I had once been and got inspired to work harder to save more money on travelling.

Speaking about reading, I finished Flight of The Storks by Jean-Christophe Grangé and wrote a small review on my Instagram. To tell the truth, classical literature is my favourite literature. I should stop giving chances to modernity and rely on reviews and time.  You can find some of my reviews and thoughts there and on my more popular account here. I write in Russian and I’m thinking about starting one more account in English to find some new people from abroad.

Several days ago I began to read The Name of The Rose by Umberto Eco. For now, I cannot get used to the author’s style and refined vocabulary. I’ve read some reviews and decided to go on as the plot promised to be entertaining.

Mikolas Josef, who took part in Eurovision 2018, released a new song Lalalalalalalaa, so I’ve listened to it lots of times. There is little sense but the song is catching haha! It cheered me up and encouraged me to feel this so-called bitchy mood.

I came to the conclusion that translation is my favourite subject at university. I’m always pleased to do all the homework, translate economic sentences and look up lots of information. Moreover, I like my teacher/professor, who is a very experienced person, so it’s the only reason to walk to university otherwise, we can start distance learning again.

TrainChinese is a must-have for all beginners of Chinese learners. The website is very helpful with translation from Russian into Chinese and vice versa, spelling the hieroglyphs, pronunciation and whats not.

Finally, yesterday I watched Lady Bird with Saoirse Ronan. The heroine is so relatable to me. Lady Bird (or Christine) is the key character of our youth, I think. Her feelings, passions, ideas are familiar to lots of us. Which university to enter? Surely not that is 30 minutes away from home. New York would be the best, but parents can’t afford it. The first boyfriend turns out to be gay, the second one is a moron. To live life to the fullest, to study in the city of dreams, to be in good relationships with mother — that’s what this film is about.
